Part 8. Mindfulness and Meditation with Buteyko Reduced Breathing Exercise, Use of Cortisol... Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/nF0ek-k-nSoMindfulness and meditation with Buteyko reduced breathing exercise, use of cortisol and other techniques While the original Buteyko method has very little related to training of the mind or mindfulness, there were developments in this area. Breathing exercises are among first most ancient meditation techniques: http://www.normalbreathing.com/meditate-mindful.php Patrick McKeown, a Buteyko teacher from Ireland, developed mindfulness exercises with muscle relaxation combined with reduced breathing that is the main exercise of the Buteyko method. These advances can be found in his audio “Anxiety Free” that is a part of the Amazon book with the same name. Further advances in the area of meditation and metacognition are to be expected in future. There were many other small and large innovations to slow down your breathing and achieve higher morning CP. Dr. Andrey Novozshilov, MD, the chief physician of the Buteyko Clinic in Moscow provided these two great ideas. How to use cortisol for breathing retraining and the Buteyko method. These ideas, as well as how to dose cortisol and how to wean off cortisol, can be found in his book “Living Without Asthma”. Dr. Andrey Novozshilov also shared how to represent reduced breathing exercise (the main breathing exercise of the Buteyko method) using a simple chart or diagram. The image is shown in the video above. SLIDE: Other innovations: - Patrick McKeown's mindfulness exercise that combines reduced breathing with muscle relaxation - Dr. Andrey Novozshilov's description related to uses of cortisol for breathing retraining and his visual representation of reduced breathing on a chart. Part 7. Grounding (Earthing) vs Barefoot Walking for NormalBreathing and Buteyko courses Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/umNWDdHAM4wPart 7. Grounding (or Earthing) vs barefoot walking technique for NormalBreathing and Buteyko breathing courses. The NormalBreathing became the first Buteyko course that introduced Grounding (Earthing) as a part of breathing retraining. Dr. Buteyko and his colleagues discovered that barefoot walking is beneficial for breathing retraining. One of the written sources that mentions barefoot walking is in the article by Soulyagin S. S. Physical factors in DVBM treatment, published in Buteyko method. Its application in medical practice, ed. by K.P. Buteyko, 2nd ed., 1991, Titul, Odessa, pages 47-53. However, their explanation of positive effects was based on the idea of nerve stimulation on the surface of the feet. The idea of grounding the human body appeared decades later when Clint Ober discovered and started to investigate effects of electrical grounding of the human body for health benefits (e.g., to reduce insomnia). Later, positive effects of nerve and muscle cells due ot Grounding were found in clinical studies. SLIDE Teachers and students of the NormalBreathing course use a unique DIY Earthing (Grounding) method at night (during sleep) that: 1) is cheaper and simpler than any commercial (Amazon, etc.) Grounding product and 2) provides better grounding (or as good as in best clinical trials on Earthing). Part 6. Sleep and Breathing Retraining: NormalBreathing vs Buteyko course Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/y0MG50pJK-0Part 6. Sleep and Breathing Retraining: NormalBreathing course vs original or classical Buteyko course Dr. KP Buteyko developed simple rules in relation to sleep, prevention of insomnia and higher morning CP: go to sleep when you are really sleepy and get out of the bed in the morning (do not stay in bed). Other known or previous ideas related to the original Buteyko breathing method are following: students naturally get less sleep with easier breathing, down to 2 hours of sleep at high 2-3 min CP, as for yoga masters (in relation to sleep duration and breath holding abilities). All problems with insomnia and poor sleep disappear with easier breathing during sleep. The NormalBreathing course includes these new additional details: - A great emphasis on the morning CP as the main parameter used by students to measure their physical health - The Breathing-Sleep Chart that provide a more detailed link about expected duration of natural sleep (in hours) and body oxygen test results - The systematic and ordered approach to using sleep-related techniques include testing sleep positions, development of ideas related to sleeping sitting, effects of nutrients, exercise, and other factors on sleep, development and use of swaddling methods. SLIDE TEXT: Students and teachers of the NormalBreathing course learn about: - The morning CP as the main parameter of physical health - The Breathing-Sleep Chart that provide relationship about expected duration of natural sleep (in hours) and body oxygen test results - The system of sleep-related techniques include effects of nutrients, exercise, and other factors on sleep, development and use of swaddling methods, testing sleep positions, and development/use of ideas and methods related to sleeping sitting. Part 5. Diet for breathing retraining: NormalBreathing vs. Buteyko course Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/DBAztUga4tkPrevious known ideas related to the Buteyko breathing technique mainly provided general rules: - Eat only when you are hungry - Stop in time - Raw foods are better since they do not intensify minute ventilation (or breathing) as mush as cooked foods - Vegetarian diets have advantages but not for all people - Cans foods are better to avoid. Here are major innovations for the NormalBreathing course. Development of the 3-day test for 5 major nutrients Buteyko and his doctors used supplements only for cleansing reactions. During the NormalBreathing course, students can test their specific deficiencies from the first days of breathing retraining. Uses of fish oil (USSR in 60-70s – no problems); the iddea was suggested by Charles Maguire, while testing is done while monitoring changes in the morning CP. “No soiling” idea Teaching ideas related to diet and GI flora based on signs related to ideal GI health including “no soiling” (no need to use toilet paper after a bowel movement). This sign (no soiling) is new even for the whole GI world with 1,000 of doctors, nutritionists and health therapists. No soiling means absence of biofilms on the surface of the small and large intestine. Overgrowth of Candida Albicans, Helicobacter Pylori, and other pathogens leads to formation of such biofilms. Ketogenic diet is the latest and greatest innovation in breathing retraining. It was suggested by Misha Sakharoff (Denmark) during last months of 2014. SLIDE: Not only for breathing retraining, but even in history of known to us research and studies related to digestive health, the NormalBreathing course first suggested and introduced that absence of soiling (no fecal residues) is a simple and important sign of ideal digestion and absence of biofilms on the surface of the gut. Currently, ketogenic diet is taught as a part of the course. Part 4. Physical exercise for breath retraining: NormalBreathing vs Buteyko courses Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/7GWRC135On0Teaching sports and physical exercise for the NormalBreathing course is based on the Breathing-Exercise Charts that provide additional practical ideas related to the use of physical exercise for other CP zones, as well as new ideas related to timing and distribution of exercise with routines. In the past, for the original Buteyko method, only CP20 was the threshold or border to differentiate students. With over 20 the current CP, students were suggested to have jogging or more intensive forms of exercise, but with 100% nose breathing (in and out). This criteria would not be applicable for people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and emphysema. The most important innovation and discovery relates to the Breathing-Exercise Chart that provides the link between amount of physical activity per day and the ideal expected CP for the next morning. There are actually 3 different Charts that are for 3 different age groups. The Main Chart is for middle age people, while younger people need to have more exercise, and older people can maintain health with less exercise, Text for the slide: Teaching physical exercise for the NormalBreathing course is based on the Breathing-Exercise Charts that provide additional practical ideas related to the use of physical exercise, new ideas related to timing and distribution of exercise, and how much exercise is required for different age groups in order to achieve certain morning CP results. Part 3. Buteyko Breathing Exercises vs. NormalBreathing Exercises Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/HzXsk_bMRqwHistorical changes in durations of Buteyko breathing sessions; from 10-15 min (1970s) to 30-40 min (in 1980s), and then to 15-20 min (in 20th century). Evolvement for the NB course: start with Frolov or DIY devices and later progressed to Buteyko breathing exercises. The original idea to combine the Buteyko method with breathing devices (the Frolov device, in particular) was suggested by Leo Volkov, a Buteyko teacher from Australia who was a translator for the 1st BIBH Conference in New Zealand in 2000. He sent me an email with his experience with the Frolov device, and soon later I was buying 24-piece boxes of Frolov devices from Russia. Later, this resulted in the development of the Amazing DIY Breathing Device. Advantages of devices for breathing exercises: - easier to practice (diaphragm too) and learn, - higher final CPs, - faster progress. New innovations and differences: C. Teaching Buteyko breathing exercises with 6 preliminary requirements, numerous contraindications (in the past, only hypertension and panic attacks were mentioned in Soviet sources) and 3 effects related to overtraining (overtraining, lost CO2 sensitivity and blunted CO2 sensitivity). Extra contra-indications include: - Presence of transplanted organs - Pregnancy - Brain traumas and acute bleeding injuries - Blood clots - Acute stages (exacerbations) of life-threatening conditions (infarct, stroke, cardiac ischemia, severe asthma attack, metastasizing cancer, septic shock, multiple organ failure, near-death experience, etc.) Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 2 diabetes) - Loss of CO2 sensitivity - Low weight (underweight) breathing students. Students of the NormalBreathing course: 1) are screened for temporary restrictions and contra-indications to ensure safety of breathing exercises 2) systematically learn crucial requirements for practicing breathwork 3) gradually progress to more difficult breathing exercises 4) are informed and monitored for prevention of potential problems due to: - general overtraining due to breathing exercises - a loss of CO2 sensitivity - blunted CO2 sensitivity. Part 2. Promotion of breathing retraining: Buteyko vs NormalBreathing Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/LR1DfvBG60wSo, what are the differences for the NormalBreathing course in comparison with the Buteyko method taught by Soviet doctors? 1. Promotion of the NormalBreathing course is based on the idea of improving body oxygen levels. In the past, the first ideas related to promotion were based on: - The Buteyko breathing method - Importance of CO2 - Breathing less air - VEDB (Volitional Elimination of Deep Breathing) - Fighting with hyperventilation. What is Buteyko method? How to define Buteyko breathing technique? Artour Rakhimov

http://youtu.be/xQv0IwBD-Y0Part 1. What is the Buteyko method? How to define the Buteyko breathing technique? Many Buteyko practitioners have been involved in trials, teaching new students and practitioners. This video presentation is about Dr. Artour Rakhimov's vision related to innovations and developments in breathing retraining and teaching the Buteyko method. Directions of developments and innovations: - Safety - More severe states of known conditions - New or more serious health conditions or diseases - Less time for students with higher efficiency or better long-term results. What is the Buteyko course? Should it exactly follow all ideas suggested by Dr. Buteyko? What is the Buteyko (original) method? There are 4 different criteria or approaches that can be used to answer this question: 1. Anything that within the main idea of the method: The cause of chronic health probems is overbreathing (low CO2 in the lungs); the direction to go is to increase CO2 in the alveoli of the lungs by reducing ventilation). The Buteyko Table of Health Zones reflects healthy states and stages of diseases. 2. “Back to Nature idea” 3. A specific fixed set of methods. Probably those that was originally used by Buteyko and his colleagues (the classical method) 4. Not specific methods and techniques (tools), but specific practitioners or closest people... (better certified or spent more time etc.) Reverse order: 4. Specific or certified people – My view: the Buteyko method is about specific methods and techniques that 1) can be reproduced and used by others (new students, new teachers) and 2) able to provide better results. Buteyko's criteria: 90% success rate for treating diseases by breathing practitioners, having 60 s CP. 3. What is the original Buteyko method? A. Historical changes were also common: breathing exercises 12-15 min, 30-40 min, now 15-20 min.... B. For example, here are Dr. Buteyko's quotes about effects of high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) in people with diabetes mellitus: “... We are convinced that the increase of sugar level is not a pathologically damaging factor. Sometimes we observe a tenfold rise of blood sugar, and so what? Nobody died from such a hyperglycemia. Sugar is not poisonous. That is clear for everybody.” This the quote from the main Russian source on the Buteyko method, from the 2nd Conference of Buteyko doctors, KP Buteyko, The theory of the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. Basic principles of hormone therapy. In: Buteyko method. Its application in medical practice, ed. by K.P. Buteyko, 2nd ed., 1991, Titul, Odessa, pages 5-10. These days, due to 21-century research on inflammation caused by glucose metabolism, it is clear that even normal blood glucose has mild toxic and addictive effects due to existence of cleaner fuel: dietary fats. If someone teaches the Buteyko method, does this mean that this Buteyko practitioner should also advise their diabetic patients to ignore hyperglycemia? Similarly, Buteyko had serious wrong ideas in relation to use and effects of breathing devices. He claimed that overbreathing during device sessions would cause overbreathing after sessions. This is not correct since any Buteyko teacher who tried devices agrees that devices lead to higher final CPs after sessions of the same duration and similar intensity (air hunger). Note that my personal opinion is that Dr. KP Buteyko was the greatest medical man. He made more significant health contributions than contributions made by any other 10 famous medical people combined. My understanding of the Buteyko breathing method: - Changes are normal for when applied now vs. in the past. Teaching Buteyko breathing method factors: - Not people or practitioners, not diplomas, but tools and results. Some tools and differences are to be discussed later. Efficiency of breathing retraining is in results (CP for 99+% of people): - Safety for special situations and conditions (vs. damage) - Increased success rate for more severe conditions (more serious forms or more difficult conditions) - Less time and better results - Better long-term results (not breathing exercises).
